Ex-opener Reacts to India’s Second Consecutive Loss: “Hardik Not Giving Chahal a Fourth Over Shocks Me”

When Nicholas Pooran started battering the Indian bowlers all around the Providence Ground in Guyana, India’s chances of winning the second T20I against the West Indies were already in ruins. The former skipper crushed 67 off only 40 deliveries to help the hosts to their second straight victory as they chased down 154. With just a little opportunity left to save the match, captain Hardik Pandya came to the attack in the tenth over and dismissed Rovman Powell with his second spell.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-116525″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-second-day-of-the-concord-biotech-ipo-subscription-gmp-and-other-information-should-you-buy-download-2023-08-07t171956.062.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com second day of the concord biotech ipo subscription gmp and other information should you buy download 2023 08 07t171956.062″ width=”1150″ height=”749″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-second-day-of-the-concord-biotech-ipo-subscription-gmp-and-other-information-should-you-buy-download-2023-08-07t171956.062.jpg 278w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-second-day-of-the-concord-biotech-ipo-subscription-gmp-and-other-information-should-you-buy-download-2023-08-07t171956.062-150×98.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1150px) 100vw, 1150px” title=”Ex-opener Reacts to India's Second Consecutive Loss: "Hardik Not Giving Chahal a Fourth Over Shocks Me" 3″>

Once the fifty-run partnership for the fifth wicket of the West Indies was broken, India exhaled a breath of relief. By dismissing the in-form batter Pooran, Mukesh Kumar compounded to the hosts’ problems as India still needed four more victims to tie the series. As Yuzvendra Chahal created a dramatic collapse by taking 2 wickets in the 16th over, which also saw Romario Shepherd run out, India’s prospects of victory seemed to be increasing.

The West Indies lost from 123/4 to 129/4 with 18 balls remaining in the match. In India, Chahal was supposed to end the game in the last over of his stint, but the skipper likely decided to save the wrist spinner for the 20th over and gave Mukesh Kumar the opportunity to bowl. Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein both hit a six and a boundary with 12 needed off the last two overs to give West Indies a dramatic two-wicket victory.

Many people expressed surprise when Yuzvendra Chahal wasn’t bowled in the 19th over. Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, expressed amazement at the action and said he didn’t understand why the leg spinner wasn’t allowed his last over.

Very unexpected, particularly when you consider that Chahal did not bowl his fourth over and Axar did not bowl even one over. Everyone believes that Hardik will take over as the head of Indian white ball cricket, therefore it surprises me a bit that he doesn’t have confidence in Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel. It amazes me that you didn’t trust Chahal, the player who introduced you to the game, in the fourth over. Probably, he could have won the match. Right now, I am as shocked as everyone else,” Jaffer told ESPN Cricinfo.

“I am also quite shocked. Jaffer said, “He should have clearly bowled the 19th over; I thought he bowled the 18th (16th) over.

Additionally, in the second T20I, India’s batting problems persisted. The bulk of batters were unable to carry out their strategies, but Tilak Varma’s first fifty helped India beyond 150. Jaffer said that if India were to survive on the Caribbean tracks, someone from the top-order needed to play a huge knock.

“One of the top-order players must reach 60 to 70, and the other players must bat around him. In certain situations, that is the simplest maneuver,” Jaffer remarked.
