“Keep your African Cup, you are corrupt,” lashes out at CAF Following Ivory Coast’s defeat against Senegal

Senegal’s Krepin Diatta, a winger, may be punished for his remarks that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is “corrupt” after the defending champions lost to hosts Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations on penalties on Monday.

“You’ve put us to death. You’re dishonest. When reporters overheard Monaco winger Diatta yelling at CAF employees as he was leaving the stadium in Yamoussoukro, the capital of Ivory Coast, he screamed, “Keep your African Cup.”

Following a 1-1 draw, Senegal’s incredible streak of not having seen a reigning champion win an AFCON knockout game since Egypt won the tournament for the third time in 2010 continued as Ivory Coast emerged victorious in the last-16 match 5-4 on penalties.

Diatta was incensed when Senegal was not given a penalty kick after Ismaila Sarr and defender Odilon Kossounou fell down in a tangle of legs in the Ivory Coast area early in the second half.

Habib Diallo’s early goal had put Senegal up 1-0 at the time, but Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho failed to signal the foul or approach the pitchside monitor to examine the video.

Ivory Coast equalized late in regular time with a spot-kick of their own that was awarded after a VAR examination. The Ivory Coast players were understandably upset that Senegal star Sadio Mane got away with a yellow card for a risky early tackle on Ibrahim Sangare.

“You go to the VAR to award them a penalty, but you don’t want to go to the VAR when our player, Sarr, scoops up the ball 40 meters from goal and runs into the box?

“I apologize, but it is excessive. They have destroyed our competitiveness, and I genuinely apologize,” Diatta said.

Ivory Coast will face either Burkina Faso or Mali in a quarterfinal match on Saturday in Bouake. The two teams will play each other in the last 16 on Tuesday.
